Minutes for LDAS meeting Friday, Sep 17th:

(1) Ken Michell gives an overview about his CV and the

heritage and history of the NOAH LSM and the global

agro-met model (global LDAS system).

 

(2) Paul Houser reports about NASA efforts for a global LDAS

on 2.5*2.5 degrees. Problems seem to exist with short and longwave

radiation estimates.

 

(3) Dan Tarpley reports about 1km resolution AVHRR monthly greenness

fraction data set for 3 dominant vegetation. The merged NDVI shows a

high spatial coherence in the 1st class, less in the 2nd and almost none

in the 3rd. It is concluded that the 2nd stage of the product should

include potentially more vegetation classes, so make shure that a certain

(to be specified) high percentage of the overall vegetation is

classified. Dennis Lettenmaier should be contacted about his LAI

values for the retrospectif runs. Ken Mitchell speaks about biases

from the ETA model. ETA has higher insolation than GOES, examples

are 2 regions south eat and west. The problem is related to cloud type

dependent sub-pixel clouds. Histograms of ETA vs. GOES are analysed.

LDAS and GOES surface temperatures should be compared.

 

(4) Dag Lohmann shows initial conditions for NOAH LSM for soil

moisture and temperature and the latest NOAH results. The first modeled

streamflow time series for selected LDAS basins (Red - Arkansas River Basin)

are shown. Problems with NORHSC snow data have to be discussed next meeting.

Dag make initial conditions available for all the modeling groups

for April 15th.

 

(5) Yun Duan presents his new soil data base, which now includes data

for the thermal conductivity. The Quartz content will be added soon.

Data are available on OH ftp site.

 

(6) Ken Mitchell discusses contents of GEWEX newsletter. First drafts

have to be written before next LDAS meeting.
