Eric Wood, Jin Huang, Florence Habets, Huug van den Dool,
John Schaake, Brian Cosgrove
1. General Updates
NCEP
* Ken Mitchell to return from Military duty on 9 August 1999
* Dan Tarpley has advised that a bug might exist in the GOES
retrieval algorithm, possibly leading to biased shortwave
and skin temperature data
* Will eventually work with John Schaake and Wayne Higgins
to improve estimates of gauge precipitation in mountainous
terrain. This will improve the precipitation forcing for
LDAS.
GSFC
* Brian gives update on his vegetation mapping scheme,
including review of objective versus subjective methods for
mapping to UMD classes. Reports that he should be able to
provide all vegetation parameters required by the three LDAS
models.
OH
* Yun has made available a plethora of new soil paramter
information on the OH website, including four separate sets
of parameter values (including Cosby and Clapp and Hornberger)
for the near-surface soil layer. Yun also has in his possession
an 11 layer database on the LDAS grid.
PRINCETON/WASHINGTON
* Eric and Florence report continued, steady progress on the
developement of the VIC driver. Curtis will work with
Florence to help her install w3lib rountines on the
Princeton platform for their retrospective work.
2. Special session on retrospective work
* Eric wood reviews the retrospective analysis plans of the
Princeton/Washington group. They plan to do a 1948-present
retrospective on a BASIN BASIS.
* Paul Houser reviewed the plans of the GSFC contingent to
perform a short-term retrospective (1996-present) using the
MOSAIC model and Eta model forcing.
* Jin Huang reviewed the plans that she and Huug van den Dool
of CPC have for doing a 1948-present retrospective using the
NCEP NOAH LSM. They will use NCEP/NCAR reanalysis and Wayne
Higgins' precipitation datasets as forcing.
