Notes From the Tenth LDAS Neeting: June 9th, 1:30pm, NOAA/NWS/OH
1. General Updates:
NCEP -
Stopped current processing to introduce new version of the NOAH model
Next version 2.0 will be ready in a week or two
Will begin running the new version retrospectively starting from 17 April before the LandSurface Workshop in Boulder, CO
Eric Wood -
AMS abstracts due @ the end of June. What do we want to do about LDAS?
Suggestion - follow along the line from OGP briefing, plus other contributions
Paul Houser -
Should we publish an AMS Bulletine article on LDAS? Suggestions -
Working on design of a framework that can work well with different land surface models.Independent of land surface model. Working to make it run closer to real time and to beable to handle updated forcing products if these become available. Will be able to handleretrospective data
Alan Robock -
Have downloaded NRCS soil moisture data. Have password for OK mesonet data, butthey don't have a product ready yet.
Getting updated dat sets from other sources (e.g., Illinois, etc.)
2. Ken's leave
Not clear when he will return
3. Soil Moisture and Temperature Data - Lifeng Luo
NRCS data -
soil moisture in % by volume
doesn't work if temp < 0C
soil moisture includes a small diurnal cycle which is not fully understood
precipitation data are available as well
suggestion - interpolate soil moisture and compute changes in water storage at each layer
4. VIC Model Update (Florence Habets)
Working on parameter values
Running precipitation for the entire domain
5. Status of Routing Model (Dag Lohmann)
Getting flow directions from Dennis' group on 1/8 degree grid for most of the majorbasins (2/3 of Miss. Basin)
Ready for basin boundaries for test basins
6. Vegetation Parameters (Brian Cosgrove)
Don't have model parameters for the UMD vegetation classes
Some classes map directly between UMD and IGBP, but some classes of UMD arecombinations of IGBP.
First steps are being taken. More careful analysis of available values is needed. Finalresults will depend on references and on our judgement.
7. Selection of LDAS Basins (John Schaake)
Spread sheet for the boundary data to Dag before next meeting
compile soils/vegetation data for each basin
8. Discussion on Soil Parameters (Group)
Doug Miller to do bulk density/pororsity
OH will send info to Doug Miller, Walter Rawls, and Rein van Genuchten
Use Krista's work to determine soil thermal properties
need to specify soil depth
- integrate water holding capacity at different depths
- review w/ Doug how he can help
9. Ongoing storage/archiving issues (Group)
Mike Ek to check with NCEP system people on status of archiving
10. Should We Make NCEP Forcing Field Available on the Web?
Mike Ek to check with Ken on this
11. PILPS 2c extension (John Schaake)
Possibility of LDAS being a pilot study for PILPS 2c extension
OH to assemble a multi-year stage iii radar data for a 64x64 4-km gridded area inArkansas/Red river region. Corresponding meteorologic data to be obtained from Dennis'group. Participating models will be run at different spatial scales to test the scalesensitivities.
12. Next LDAS Meeting Schedule
July 12, Monday, NCEP, 1:30pm
Main agenda, retrospective runs
