Minutes for LDAS meeting Friday, Oct. 15, NOAA OH
-- Next meeting November 15th, Monday, 1.00pm, NASA
Alan Robock and Eric Wood suggested that we should hold one LDAS
meeting per year in New Jersey.
(1) Eric Wood raised concerns on real-time forcing data and pointed
out that surface air temperature in the Columbia river basin was quite
different from the weather map (-10 C vs. +10 C). The possible reason
given by Curtis Marshall is that EDAS data were used.
Eric Wood also pointed out the sharp contrast in radiation data
in US-Canadian border.
(2) Questions on adjustment to forcing data were asked. Curtis said
that no adjustment was made to downward short wave data, but there was
adjustment in the downward long wave data.
Action item: NCEP and John Schaake to meet with Wayne Higgins on
orographic precipitation adjustment.
(3) Alan Robock raised the question on why we choose the term LDAS.
John Schaake answered how the term was originated.
(4) Discussed GEWEX publication issues. Eric Wood raised
communication issues among the entire group. How to convey the main
ideas of LDAS and what results to show to general science community
was discussed. Alan Robock asked how soil moisture from difference
models be compared. Eric Wood mentioned Milly-Koster range should be
used to rescale the model outputs.
Action items: Discuss above issues with Ken Mitchell.
Future publication in EOS or AMS Bulletin should be considered.
(5) What model output variables to be archived for GCIP?
(6) How to handle different soil layers for different groups?
(7) Yun Duan asked about possible future LDAS seminar in OH. Paul
Houser mentioned same possibility for NASA. All agree those seminars
should be given.
(8) Eric Wood proposed two LDAS mailing lists: a working group list
and a general list.
Action item: Each group send Paul or Brian a list of working
group members.
(9) Eric Wood presented some retrospective run results from VIC model
by University of Washington. Florence Habets showed some real time
run results.
Action item: Meet with Tom Carroll to discuss NOHRSC snow product
next month.
(10) John Schaake described how 100 LDAS test basins were selected.
Action item: OH will combine UW forcing data with OH
precipitation and streamflow data for each of the selected basins.
ARM/CART will be included as a test basin. Eric Wood suggested making
a complete list of possible validation basins and studies.
(11) Alan Robock reported some difficulty in obtaining Oklahoma soil
moisture data.
(12) Curtis Marshall gave update on terrain adjustment of downward
long wave radiation. Stage IV precipitation data should be provided as
possible input forcing data for LDAS runs. Curtis Marshall gave a
tutorial on how to read and write Grib files
