Hydros SiteReview

As part of the internal HYDROS site review, datasets and information were determined to estimate statistics in order to evaluate the region of the globe where HYDROS would be most applicable.

The two images below are global maps of vegetation water content (kg/m2) for both maximum and minimum times of the year via satellite estimates of leaf area index (LAI). The LAI data was derived from AVHRR NDVI measurements developed at Boston University. The maps mask out land ice, water, and mountainous topography. The mountaineous topography was defined as having a slope of greater than 0.15.
Maximum vegetation water content in units of kg/m2.The scale ranges from 0 to 11 with the highest values located over Europe, the eastern US, and South America of values from 6-10. The lowest values, neglecting northern Africa were located over the southwest US, central Asia, and parts of Australia of values rangin from 0-2. Minimum vegetation water content in units of kg/m2. The scale ranges from 0 to 11 with the highest values located over eastern Europe, the southeast US, central South America, and central Africa of values from 3-6. The lowest values, neglecting northern Africa were located over the southwest US, central Asia, and parts of Australia of values rangin from 0-2.
The table below illustrates some of the statistics calculated during this process.
